FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Starting this weekend, parents can sign their kids up to learn a new sport and get a chance at a college scholarship. Saturday, Fairfield’s Nutmeg Bowl and its in-house store, Buddies Pro Shop, will start an instructional course culminating in a scholarship tournament for young bowlers.

Kids ages 7 and up who enter the program will get discounted practice games ($2.50 per game), free shoe and ball rental and a discount on their own ball at Buddies. They will also get to attend a clinic each week with Chris Forry, a coach to professional bowlers, and Tim West, an instructor certified by the United States Bowling Congress.

“Bowling is a life-long, year-round sport that is driven by teamwork and personal improvement. It is ideal for kids because of the low injury rate, and the non-contact nature of the sport; it’s a great way for kids to experience team play during the winter months,”  Forry said in a press release.  “Most important, no one sits on the bench. Every bowler plays in every game.”

Each bowler enrolled in the course will also be eligible for a free year-end scholarship tournament. Local businesses have agreed to sponsor scholarships for players based on their bowling skills and their academic standing. Each entry in the tournament will earn a scholarship of some kind.

Kids can register for the program at Nutmeg Bowl, 802 Villa Ave. in Fairfield, on Saturday, Jan. 14, starting at 9 a.m. The first round of bowling will follow. The course costs $12 a week or $150 up front for the full course. For more information call the alley at 203-367-7741.
